Selma Elaine was Shirley's maid of honor. S. Elaine's daughter Marjorie wrote: Talking to my mother today she mentioned how Shirley wore very thick glasses since she was a girl, but didn't want to wear them at her wedding. She remembers Shirley telling my mother to lead her to the alter since she couldn't see a thing, and they were both laughing hysterically right before the ceremony.

After Penn State Shriley graduated from CCNY in June 1949 where she met Henry. Shirley then got a one year internship at Manteno State Hospital in Illinois. Henry follewed her there and got a job there as well.
